On behalf of the entire MEML-SA team, we are excited to welcome you and hope that your time at Rice will help you discover new opportunities, build meaningful connections, and realize your potential as you shape the next chapter of your journey.
Getting here is an achievement worth celebrating and an important milestone in your academic and professional journey. As you begin this new chapter, Rice will offer you opportunities to expand your knowledge, strengthen your professional capabilities, develop personally, build meaningful relationships, and engage with a diverse and dynamic community.
For many of you, especially those joining Rice from around the world, this journey represents not only the beginning of your graduate studies but also an exciting new chapter in a new environment. Starting graduate school comes with many new experiences, and moving to a new country can add another dimension to that transition. Having gone through this journey myself as an international student, I learned how valuable it is to connect with the people and resources around you, ask questions, and give yourself time to settle into the Rice community.Rice has given me opportunities to learn, contribute, build meaningful relationships, and become involved in the community in ways I had not initially anticipated. I encourage you to remain open to those opportunities and experiences, because they can become an important part of your journey here.
My advice to you is simple: be proactive and remain open to new experiences.
Graduate school is an opportunity to challenge yourself, discover new interests, and grow in ways you may not have anticipated. Take initiative, ask thoughtful questions, engage with people who bring different perspectives, and do not hesitate to pursue something simply because it feels unfamiliar. Often, the experiences that challenge you the most are the ones that contribute most meaningfully to your growth.
At Rice, you will have access to a wide range of opportunities that complement your MEML experience. Engage with research and innovation across the university, participate in professional development workshops and seminars, interact with industry professionals, contribute to student organizations, and connect with the broader Rice community. Use these experiences intentionally not simply to add to your résumé, but to broaden your perspective, strengthen your professional network, and better understand the direction you want your career to take.
Another lesson I have come to value is the importance of building strong relationships throughout your graduate experience. Engage with your professors not only when you need guidance, but also when a topic sparks your curiosity. Learn alongside your classmates, exchange perspectives, and make an effort to know the people around you. Graduate school becomes far more meaningful when it is approached as a shared experience rather than an individual pursuit.
MEML-SA is also here to serve as a bridge between students and the broader MEML community. Whether you are looking for information, trying to find the right university resource, or simply have an idea that could improve the student experience, we encourage you to reach out. Our goal is to remain approachable, responsive, and representative of the students we serve.
Finally, allow yourself time to grow into this experience. There is no expectation that you will have everything figured out from the moment you arrive. Graduate school is as much about discovering your direction as it is about advancing your education. Be patient with yourself, learn from challenges, remain adaptable, and allow your confidence to develop with experience. By the end of your time at Rice, you may find that some of your greatest growth came from moments you could not have anticipated when you first arrived.
