Leadership through Engineering Design

Engineering design provides the perfect context for Rice students to practice their leadership skills while solving real problems of consequence. Through the RCEL Apprentice Leaders Program, upperclass students help scope and mentor meaningful semester-long engineering design projects for teams of freshmen. The freshmen gain an early appreciation for design and leadership, while learning about the great facilities available in the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen (Rice’s interdisciplinary engineering prototype design lab). Those students will then apply these skills in future classes and activities, such as Engineers Without Borders, the Solar Car team, or Beyond Traditional Borders global health projects. Students are also encouraged to compete in the annual Engineering Design Showcase and Poster Competition.
